Definition
Visual representations such as drawings, paintings, or diagrams used to explain or decorate text. Can also refer to examples that clarify or explain a concept.
Etymology
From Latin 'illustrare' meaning to light up or make bright, from 'in-' (into) and 'lustrare' (to illuminate). The word evolved from meaning 'to shed light on' metaphorically to include actual visual representations by the 16th century.
Kelly Says
Illustrations bridge the gap between abstract concepts and human understanding - our brains process visual information 60,000 times faster than text. Medieval manuscripts were 'illuminated' with illustrations, literally bringing light and color to knowledge.
