Definition
A painting technique where paint is laid on thickly so that brushstrokes or palette knife marks are clearly visible. The raised texture creates a three-dimensional quality on the canvas surface.
Etymology
From Italian 'impastare' meaning 'to knead' or 'to make into paste,' reflecting how the paint is applied like thick dough. The technique became prominent in Baroque painting and reached its peak with Post-Impressionists like Van Gogh.
Kelly Says
Van Gogh's impasto technique was so thick that his paintings cast actual shadows from the raised paint! When you see a Van Gogh in person, the swirling paint creates a sculptural landscape that changes as you move around it - it's like seeing his emotional energy frozen in three dimensions.
