Implication

/ˌɪmpləˈkeɪʃən/ noun

Definition

A result or effect that is suggested but not stated directly; or the act of showing someone is involved in something.

Etymology

From Latin 'implicationem' from 'implicare' (to entwine, involve), with the sense of things being folded together. It developed meanings of both logical consequence and involvement in wrongdoing.

Kelly Says

An implication is like the ‘shadow meaning’ of what you say—what follows from your words even if you never said it out loud. The same root gives us both logic implications and criminal implications: in both cases, things are tightly wrapped together.
