Improbable

/ɪmˈprɑbəbəl/ adjective

Definition

Not likely to be true or to happen; having a low probability of occurrence. It suggests something is possible but statistically or practically unlikely based on available evidence.

Etymology

From Latin improbabilis, meaning 'not likely to be approved,' composed of in- (not) + probabilis (worthy of approval, provable). The term originally related to things that couldn't be proven or demonstrated satisfactorily.

Kelly Says

Improbable events are the stuff of great stories! While impossible things can't happen, improbable things make for compelling narratives precisely because they could happen but probably won't – creating surprise and wonder when they do.
