Incision

/ɪnˈsɪʒən/ noun

Definition

A surgical cut made through skin and underlying tissues to access internal structures during a medical procedure. The size, location, and direction of incisions are carefully planned to provide adequate surgical exposure while minimizing tissue damage and scarring.

Etymology

From Latin 'incisio' meaning a cutting into, derived from 'incidere' meaning to cut into. The term has been fundamental to surgical vocabulary since ancient times when the first deliberate cuts were made for medical procedures.

Kelly Says

The orientation of surgical incisions follows natural skin tension lines called Langer's lines - cuts made parallel to these lines heal with minimal scarring, while cuts across them can create wide, prominent scars. This principle, discovered in the 1860s, still guides every surgeon's first cut today!
