Incongruence

/ɪnˈkɑŋɡruəns/ noun

Definition

A state of mismatch or discord between one's inner experience and outer expression, or between different aspects of the self. This creates internal tension and can lead to psychological distress or inauthenticity.

Etymology

From Latin 'in-' (not) + 'congruere' (to agree). The psychological concept was developed by Carl Rogers in humanistic psychology to describe the gap between one's real self and ideal self, or between inner feelings and outward behavior.

Kelly Says

Incongruence is that uncomfortable feeling when you're smiling on the outside while crying on the inside, or when your actions don't match your values - it's like trying to sing a duet where the voices are in different keys. This internal discord is often the source of anxiety and depression, which is why therapeutic approaches that help people align their authentic selves with their lived experience can be so powerfully healing.
