Intake

/ˈɪnˌteɪk/ noun

Definition

The amount of food, liquid, or air taken into the body, or an opening through which something enters. Also refers to the process of admitting people into an institution or program.

Etymology

Compound of 'in' (into) + 'take' (from Old Norse 'taka'). Originally referred to water channels or openings in dams and mills, later expanding to biological consumption and institutional admission processes in the 19th-20th centuries.

Kelly Says

The concept of 'intake' beautifully illustrates how we think about boundaries and flow - whether it's air into lungs, students into schools, or water into engines, we're always managing what crosses the threshold from outside to inside. Engineers and biologists use nearly identical principles when designing intake systems, showing how nature and technology converge on efficient solutions.
