Internet

/ˈɪn.tə.net/ noun

Definition

The global network of computers and devices that are connected and can share information with each other.

Etymology

Short for *internetwork*, from *inter-* “between” and *network.* The term grew out of U.S. defense and research projects in the late 1960s and 1970s, especially ARPANET.

Kelly Says

The internet isn’t one thing—it’s millions of private and public networks all agreeing to talk the same way. That invisible agreement (protocols) is what lets a photo on your phone jump across the planet in under a second.
