Inundate

/ˈɪn.ʌn.deɪt/ verb

Definition

To flood something with water; or to overwhelm someone with so many things, tasks, or messages that they can hardly cope.

Etymology

From Latin *inundare* “to overflow, flood,” from *in-* “on, onto” and *unda* “wave.” It originally described rivers overflowing their banks.

Kelly Says

Being inundated with emails or homework is basically a mental flood—you can’t see the ground anymore. Our brains haven’t evolved for constant inundation, which is why “just one more thing” can suddenly feel like too much.
