Definition
A request or message asking someone to come to an event, or an action that encourages something to happen.
Etymology
From Latin 'invitare' meaning to invite or entertain. The root may be related to 'via' (way/path), suggesting the idea of showing someone the way to an event.
Kelly Says
In Roman times, 'invitare' literally suggested 'turning someone toward' an event by showing them the way—so inviting someone was like being their guide! The same root gave us words about welcoming and paths.
