Invoice

/ˈɪnvɔɪs/ noun

Definition

A detailed bill for goods or services provided, listing items and their costs.

Etymology

From Old French 'envois', meaning 'things sent' or 'dispatch of goods.' It literally meant a shipment being sent out, not a request for payment! The word shifted from describing the goods themselves to the document that accompanied them, and finally to our modern bill for payment.

Kelly Says

Medieval merchants created invoices not to demand money, but to list what they were shipping out the door. It's like how we might write 'contents: books, wine, fabric' on a package today, except that simple list evolved into our complex billing system.
