Jackpot

/ˈdʒækpɒt/ noun

Definition

The biggest prize in a lottery, game, or gambling situation; an unexpectedly large success or lucky find.

Etymology

Originated in American poker around 1880s, combining 'jack' (the playing card) with 'pot' (the pool of money). Players needed at least a pair of jacks to open betting, so the pot kept growing—'hitting the jackpot' meant finally winning big.

Kelly Says

The jackpot is why casinos keep people playing—humans are terrible at understanding tiny odds, so our brains obsess over the *one* person who wins instead of the thousands who lose. The word captures our hope beautifully, even if math isn't on our side!
