Jin

/dʒɪn/ noun

Definition

In Islamic and Arabian mythology, a supernatural being made of smokeless fire, capable of assuming various forms and possessing free will; also anglicized as 'genie'.

Etymology

From Arabic 'jinn' (plural) or 'jinni' (singular), meaning 'hidden' or 'concealed'. The word entered English through French 'génie' during translation of Arabian tales, leading to the familiar 'genie' form popularized in Western folklore.

Kelly Says

Unlike the lamp-rubbing genies of Western stories, traditional jin in Islamic culture are complex beings with their own societies, religions, and moral choices. They can be good or evil, Muslim or non-Muslim, making them far more nuanced than popular culture suggests.
