Journalists

/ˈdʒɜrnəlɪsts/ noun

Definition

Plural of journalist; people who write, edit, or produce news stories for newspapers, magazines, television, radio, or online media. Professional gatherers and reporters of news.

Etymology

From French journaliste, from journal (daily newspaper), ultimately from Latin diurnus meaning 'daily.' The profession emerged with the rise of regular publications in the 18th century, when daily news became commercially viable.

Kelly Says

The word 'journalist' is only about 200 years old, younger than the United States Constitution! Before newspapers became daily publications, news was spread by town criers, traveling merchants, and occasional pamphlets - the idea of professional news-gathering is surprisingly modern.
