Juke

/dʒuːk/ noun

Definition

A jukebox; also historically a place (often illegally) where people danced to music and drank; a style of blues music and dance.

Etymology

From Gullah and West African languages (Wolof 'joog' meaning to live or 'disordered'). Brought to America through African diaspora communities in the 1800s. 'Juke joint' became the standard term for these venues.

Kelly Says

Juke joints were crucial to American music history—they were often the only integrated spaces in the segregated South where Black and white musicians could jam together! The jukebox itself (invented 1889) was named after these venues, not the other way around.
