Definition
A form of entertainment where people sing along to recorded music using a microphone, typically with lyrics displayed on a screen.
Etymology
From Japanese 'kara' (empty) and 'ōkesutora' (orchestra, from English). Invented in 1971 by Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue, who created the first karaoke machine for a snack bar in Kobe.
Kelly Says
Daisuke Inoue never patented his karaoke invention and missed out on billions in royalties, but he's considered a cultural hero in Japan! Karaoke has become so embedded in Japanese business culture that there are over 100,000 karaoke boxes in Japan - more than there are McDonald's worldwide.
