A keyboard is a set of keys arranged in rows, used to play musical instruments or to type letters and commands into a computer or device.
Formed in English from “key” and “board”, first used for musical instruments with rows of keys. Later it was applied to typewriters and then computers.
The layout of most computer keyboards (QWERTY) was designed to slow typists slightly so old typewriters wouldn’t jam. Even though we no longer use those machines, we still inherit their awkward key design. Our fingers are living with a 19th-century engineering problem.
