Khartoum

/kɑːrˈtuːm/ noun

Definition

The capital city of Sudan, located at the confluence of the White Nile and Blue Nile rivers in northeastern Africa.

Etymology

From Arabic 'al-Kharṭūm' meaning 'the elephant trunk' or 'the trunk,' referring to the geographical shape of land between the two Nile rivers. The city was founded as a military outpost in 1821 and became Sudan's major urban center.

Kelly Says

Khartoum is built on land shaped exactly like an elephant's trunk where two major rivers meet, and the city was historically the site of dramatic colonial conflicts—General Gordon's siege there in 1885 became one of the most famous stories of British imperial adventure.
