Khmer

/kəˈmɛr/ noun

Definition

A person from Cambodia or the main language spoken there; also refers to the ancient empire and culture of Southeast Asia.

Etymology

From Khmer kmɛr in the native language, the ethnonym for the Cambodian people. The word appears in Sanskrit inscriptions as Kamboja. It has been used for over 2,000 years to describe this civilization.

Kelly Says

The Khmer Empire built Angkor Wat in the 12th century, the largest religious monument on Earth, yet most people don't realize the Khmer language predates and has influenced Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese. The Khmer writing system is one of the oldest in Southeast Asia and still shapes regional literacy.
