Kraken

/ˈkreɪkən/ noun

Definition

A legendary sea monster of enormous size said to appear off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. In modern usage, it refers to any gigantic or monstrous creature, especially of the sea.

Etymology

From Norwegian 'kraken', derived from Old Norse 'kraki' meaning 'pole' or 'stake', possibly referring to the creature's long tentacles. The word entered English in the 18th century through maritime folklore and scientific speculation about giant sea creatures.

Kelly Says

The kraken legend may have originated from real encounters with giant squids, which can grow up to 43 feet long and weren't scientifically documented until 2007! Norse sailors described the kraken as so massive that it could be mistaken for an island, and some accounts claim its movement could create dangerous whirlpools.
