Kurdish

/ˈkɜrdɪʃ/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the Kurds, their language, or their culture. The Kurds are an ethnic group primarily inhabiting regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria.

Etymology

From Persian 'Kurd' meaning 'nomad' or 'tent-dweller,' though Kurds themselves prefer derivations from 'kur' meaning mountain. The suffix '-ish' was added in English to form the adjective, following the pattern of other ethnographic adjectives.

Kelly Says

Kurdish represents one of the most complex linguistic situations in the world - it's actually a group of related languages with multiple scripts and dialects that can be mutually unintelligible. Despite having 30-40 million speakers worldwide, Kurdish has faced suppression in several countries, making it a powerful symbol of cultural resilience and identity.
