Lances

/ˈlænsɪz/ noun

Definition

Long pointed weapons with a shaft and sharp point, used by soldiers on horseback, or to pierce something with a lance-like motion.

Etymology

From Old French 'lance,' possibly from Latin 'lancea.' Medieval knights made the lance iconic, but it was used in warfare for thousands of years before medieval times.

Kelly Says

Medieval lances were so effective that knights could splinter them on impact—tournaments even had 'lances of courtesy' made to break safely, creating early versions of stunt equipment!
