Definition
The quality or state of being late, or arriving after the expected or scheduled time.
Etymology
From Old English 'læt' meaning slow or late, plus the -ness suffix that forms abstract nouns. The word has remained relatively unchanged for over a thousand years.
Kelly Says
Different cultures have wildly different attitudes about lateness—some consider being 15 minutes late completely rude, while in other places it's totally expected! Linguists call this 'temporal culture.'
