Leafy

/ˈlifi/ adjective

Definition

Having many leaves or characterized by abundant foliage. Resembling or consisting of leaves; green and lush with vegetation.

Etymology

From Old English 'leaf' plus the suffix '-y', forming an adjective. 'Leaf' comes from Proto-Germanic 'laubaz', which also gave us 'lobby' (originally a covered walkway with foliage). The suffix creates a descriptive quality word.

Kelly Says

The connection between 'leaf' and 'lobby' reveals how our ancestors thought about covered spaces - lobbies were originally leafy, outdoor corridors. Today's 'leafy' neighborhoods are prized partly because humans have an innate preference for environments that suggest shelter and resources, a trait called biophilia.
