Definition
A benign tumor composed of fat tissue (adipose tissue). Lipomas are soft, moveable lumps under the skin that grow slowly and are typically painless, representing the most common type of soft tissue tumor.
Etymology
From Greek 'lipos' meaning fat and suffix '-oma' meaning tumor. The term was coined in the early 19th century as medical understanding of different tissue types and tumor classification became more precise.
Kelly Says
Lipoma literally means 'fat tumor' - it's basically a collection of fat cells that got lost and decided to set up their own little community under your skin! They're like the friendly neighbors of the tumor world: soft, squishy, and completely harmless, just hanging out minding their own business.
