Definition
A medical procedure that uses shock waves, laser, or ultrasound to break kidney stones, gallstones, or other calcifications into smaller fragments that can be passed naturally from the body. The most common type is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).
Etymology
From Greek 'lithos' meaning stone and 'tripsis' meaning rubbing or crushing. The term literally means 'stone crushing,' reflecting the procedure's primary function of fragmenting calcified deposits.
