Logs

/lɔɡz/ noun, verb

Definition

Records of events or activities written down; also pieces of wood from cut trees.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch 'logge' (block of wood). The nautical sense (recording ship's speed and activities in a 'ship's log') led to the modern sense of keeping detailed written records.

Kelly Says

The word 'logs' connects to 'logic' in a funny way—a ship's log was literally a block of wood thrown overboard to measure speed, and sailors had to think logically about the data. Our word for careful record-keeping comes from floating wood!
