Loveseat

/ˈlʌvˌsit/ noun

Definition

A small sofa designed to seat two people, typically couples.

Etymology

The name is charmingly misleading - loveseats weren't designed for romance but for 18th-century women's enormous dresses. The wide seat accommodated the massive panniers (side hoops) that made fashionable gowns extend several feet on each side. 'Loveseat' became the name because the furniture was wide enough that a couple could sit together despite the woman's voluminous skirts taking up most of the space.

Kelly Says

Loveseats got their romantic name not from passion but from fashion - they were designed to fit 18th-century women's ridiculously wide dresses that could extend three feet on each side. The 'love' part just meant there was finally furniture big enough for a couple to sit together despite one person wearing a dress the size of a small tent.
