Lying

/ˈlaɪɪŋ/ verb

Definition

The act of deliberately stating something false or misleading, or the physical position of reclining horizontally.

Etymology

Two distinct etymologies: for deception, from Old English lyge 'falsehood'; for reclining, from Old English licgan 'to recline'. Both words converged in Middle English despite different origins, creating the modern homonym.

Kelly Says

Humans are surprisingly bad at detecting lies - studies show we're accurate only about 54% of the time, barely better than chance. Interestingly, pathological liars often begin to believe their own fabrications due to memory reconstruction processes in the brain.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Women labeled 'liars' for reporting abuse, assault, discrimination (gaslighting). Men's deception framed as 'strategic' or 'pragmatic.' Credibility is gendered.

Inclusive Usage

Evaluate claims by evidence, not by gendered credibility assumptions. Recognize systemic barriers to being believed.

Inclusive Alternatives

["dishonest","falsifying","misleading"]

Empowerment Note

Women's testimonies were systematically discredited; modern credibility standards must actively counteract this history.
