Mage

/meɪdʒ/ noun

Definition

A magician or sorcerer, especially in fantasy literature and games.

Etymology

From Old French 'mage', from Latin 'magus', from Greek 'magos' originally referring to Zoroastrian priests. The word entered English through references to the Biblical Magi and evolved to describe any practitioner of magic.

Kelly Says

The word mage connects us directly to the wise men who visited baby Jesus - they were called 'magi', the plural of 'magus', because they were Persian priest-astrologers who practiced what people then considered advanced science. It's fascinating how the word traveled from ancient Persia through biblical texts to modern fantasy novels and video games.
