Magi

/ˈmeɪdʒaɪ/ noun

Definition

The plural of magus; wise men or astrologers, especially the three wise men who visited the infant Jesus according to Christian tradition.

Etymology

From Latin 'magi,' plural of 'magus,' from Greek 'magos,' ultimately from Old Persian 'maguš' (priest). Originally referred to Zoroastrian priests in ancient Persia, later extended to any practitioners of magic or astrology.

Kelly Says

The Magi's journey from Persian fire-priests to the three wise men of Christmas illustrates how religious concepts travel and transform across cultures. Interestingly, the word 'magic' derives from these ancient Persian priests, showing how the mysterious and the sacred were once considered synonymous.
