Definition
Extremely impressive or extraordinary; causing wonder or admiration (British spelling of marvelous).
Etymology
From Old French 'merveillos,' from Latin 'mirabilis' (worthy of wonder), from 'mirari' (to wonder at). The sense evolved from 'miraculous' in the 13th century to 'wonderful' by the 16th century.
Kelly Says
The word shares its Latin root with 'miracle' and 'mirror' - all connected to the act of looking and wondering. When we call something marvellous, we're literally saying it makes us wonder and stare in amazement, just like looking into a mirror once did for ancient peoples.
