Maturity

/məˈtʃʊə.rɪ.ti/ noun

Definition

Maturity is the state of being fully grown or developed, either physically or emotionally. It can also mean the time when something is ready, such as when a loan must be paid back.

Etymology

From Latin “maturitas” meaning 'ripeness, fullness of growth', from “maturus” 'ripe, timely'. It entered English via French and kept both the idea of physical ripeness and the more abstract sense of readiness. Financial uses grew from the idea of a 'ripe' or due time.

Kelly Says

Maturity is basically 'ripeness' applied to humans and ideas—are you ready, or still green? That’s why the same word can describe a responsible teenager and the date your bond finally pays out.
