Median

/ˈmiː.di.ən/ noun, adjective

Definition

As a noun, the median is the middle value in a set of numbers when they are arranged in order. As an adjective, median describes something in the middle, such as a median strip dividing a road.

Etymology

From Latin “medianus” meaning 'in the middle', from “medius” 'middle'. It entered English through French in mathematical and anatomical contexts. The road and statistics uses both rely on the same 'middle position' idea.

Kelly Says

In statistics, the median can tell a very different story from the mean—especially when a few huge or tiny values distort the average. On roads, the 'median' is literally the middle strip, a concrete reminder of the math word’s origin.
