Mesocycle

/ˈmɛzoʊˌsaɪkəl/ noun

Definition

An intermediate training cycle within a macrocycle, typically lasting 2-8 weeks and focusing on specific training adaptations. Each mesocycle has a particular emphasis, such as base building, strength development, or competition preparation.

Etymology

From Greek 'mesos' meaning middle or intermediate, combined with 'kyklos' meaning cycle. This periodization term was developed alongside macrocycle and microcycle concepts in Eastern European sports science during the systematic training revolution of the 1960s.

Kelly Says

Think of a mesocycle as a chapter in the book of your training year - each one tells a specific part of your performance story! Elite runners might have a base-building mesocycle in early season that looks completely different from their speed mesocycle before championships, like switching from building the engine to fine-tuning the transmission.
