Messiah

/məˈsaɪə/ noun

Definition

A savior or liberator, especially in religious contexts; someone regarded as the deliverer of a people or cause.

Etymology

From Hebrew 'mashiach' meaning 'anointed one', through Greek 'messias' and Latin 'messias'. The concept of anointing with oil marked someone as chosen by God for a special purpose in ancient Near Eastern cultures.

Kelly Says

The word 'messiah' literally means 'the anointed one', referring to the ancient practice of pouring oil on kings and priests to mark their sacred status. Interestingly, the English word 'Christ' comes from the Greek translation of this same concept - 'christos' also meaning 'anointed'.
