A toxic clear liquid used as fuel and in industrial processes, also called wood alcohol because it was originally made by burning wood.
Etymology
Compound of 'meth-' from methyl (derived from Greek 'methy' meaning wine) combined with '-ol' (the suffix for alcohols). Named because it was originally produced by destructive distillation of wood.
