Mexico

/ˈmɛksɪkoʊ/ proper noun

Definition

Mexico is a country in North America, south of the United States, known for its rich history, diverse cultures, and varied landscapes from deserts to tropical coasts. Its capital is Mexico City.

Etymology

From Spanish ‘México,’ which comes from the Nahuatl word ‘Mēxihco,’ the name for the Aztec capital region. The original meaning is debated, but it may relate to the god Mexi(tli) and mean ‘place of Mexi.’

Kelly Says

The name ‘Mexico’ originally pointed to a specific valley and city, not the whole country. Mexico City today sits on the site of Tenochtitlán, a lake city so impressive that early Europeans compared it to Venice.
