Microscope

/ˈmaɪkrəˌskoʊp/ noun

Definition

A microscope is an instrument that makes very small objects look much larger so you can see details that are invisible to the naked eye. Scientists use it to study cells, microbes, and tiny structures.

Etymology

From Greek ‘mikros’ meaning ‘small’ and ‘skopein’ meaning ‘to look at’ or ‘to examine.’ The word came into use in the 17th century with the invention of early microscopes.

Kelly Says

A microscope doesn’t just ‘zoom in’—it opens a hidden world that people didn’t even know existed until a few centuries ago. The discovery of cells and germs through microscopes completely rewired medicine and biology.
