Midwest

/ˈmɪdˌwɛst/ noun

Definition

A region of the United States typically including states like Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Etymology

Compound of 'mid' (middle) and 'west,' coined in late 19th century as the American frontier moved further west. Originally called the 'Northwest Territory,' it became 'Midwest' when the Pacific Northwest was settled.

Kelly Says

The Midwest is often called 'America's Heartland' and produces about 75% of the nation's corn and soybeans, making it literally the breadbasket of America! The region's flat terrain was created by glaciers during the last Ice Age, leaving behind incredibly fertile soil.
