Minidv

/ˈmɪniˌdiˈvi/ noun

Definition

A digital videocassette format introduced in 1995 for consumer camcorders. These small tapes could record high-quality digital video and audio for home use.

Etymology

Compound of 'mini' (small) + 'DV' (Digital Video), created as a trademark format by a consortium of electronics manufacturers. The format emerged during the transition from analog to digital home video recording.

Kelly Says

MiniDV tapes were revolutionary because they stored video digitally on magnetic tape, making them the bridge between analog VHS and modern memory card recording! Despite being 'mini,' these tapes could hold up to 63 minutes of pristine digital footage - impressive for something smaller than a deck of playing cards.
