Miosis

/maɪˈoʊsɪs/ noun

Definition

Abnormal constriction or narrowing of the pupil. It can result from medications (especially opioids), nerve damage, or certain medical conditions affecting the autonomic nervous system.

Etymology

From Greek 'meiosis' meaning 'lessening' or 'diminution,' derived from 'meion' (less). The term entered ophthalmology in the 19th century to describe the opposite condition to mydriasis (pupil dilation).

Kelly Says

Miosis is like having pupils stuck in 'energy-saving mode' - they're so constricted they look like pinpoints, and this can be a telltale sign of opioid use or overdose! The pupils are so small in severe miosis that they might not even respond to darkness, making affected individuals struggle with night vision.
