Definition
An unfortunate accident or something that goes wrong, usually not something super serious.
Etymology
From Middle English combining 'mis-' (bad or wrong) and 'hap' (luck or chance). It emerged around the 14th century to describe bad luck—basically, when chance/fortune failed you.
Kelly Says
The word 'hap' in mishap is the same root that gives us 'happy'—both come from the idea of luck and chance, so a mishap is literally 'bad luck' that occurred, which is why it feels less serious than 'disaster.'
