Mondegreen

/ˈmɒndɪɡriːn/ noun

Definition

A misheard or misinterpreted phrase, especially in song lyrics, that gives rise to a new, plausible meaning.

Etymology

Coined by Sylvia Wright in 1954, who misheard the Scottish ballad lyric 'laid him on the green' as 'Lady Mondegreen.' She imagined a tragic noble lady who never existed.
