Monism

/ˈmoʊnɪzəm/ or /ˈmɑːnɪzəm/ noun

Definition

Monism is the philosophical view that everything in reality comes from one basic kind of substance or principle. It contrasts with dualism or pluralism, which say there are two or many fundamental kinds of things.

Etymology

From Greek “monos,” meaning “single, alone,” plus the suffix “-ism” indicating a belief system. The term became common in modern philosophy to describe one-substance theories of reality.

Kelly Says

Monism is the ultimate ‘all is one’ idea—whether that ‘one’ is matter, mind, energy, or something more mysterious. Many religious and scientific worldviews, from some branches of Hinduism to strict materialism, are actually different flavors of monism.
