Definition
Monotonous describes something that is boring because it is repeated over and over without change, like a dull voice or a repetitive task. It often makes people feel tired or uninterested.
Etymology
From Late Latin “monotonus,” from Greek “monotonos,” meaning “of one tone,” from “monos” (single) and “tonos” (tone, pitch). It originally referred to sound that did not vary in pitch.
Kelly Says
Monotonous started as a sound word—literally ‘one tone’—before it spread to describe any boring sameness. When a job feels monotonous, your brain is essentially complaining that life has gone flat in pitch.
