Cleaned a floor by rubbing it with a mop (a tool with absorbent material on the end of a stick).
Possibly from Dutch 'moppe' meaning 'bundle of rags,' or from an old word for a dishcloth. The term became common in the 1800s as mops became standard household tools.
The mop design hasn't changed much in 200 years, but interestingly the word 'mopping up' is also military slang for finishing off remaining enemy forces after a main battle!
