Mosquitos

/məˈskiːtoʊz/ noun

Definition

small flying insects with long needle-like mouthparts that pierce skin and suck blood, often spreading diseases.

Etymology

From Spanish 'mosquito,' a diminutive of 'mosca' (fly). The Spanish borrowed it from Latin-based Romance languages. Only female mosquitos bite.

Kelly Says

Mosquitos are the deadliest animals to humans—more people die from mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue than from wars, making them more dangerous than sharks, snakes, and bears combined.
