Definition
Attacked and robbed by someone, usually on the street; or made exaggerated facial expressions.
Etymology
Mugged as 'attacked and robbed' comes from the slang 'mug' (face) combined with the violent meaning, appearing in English in the 1800s. The second meaning comes from 'mugging' (making faces), theatrical in origin.
Kelly Says
The word 'mug' has three completely different meanings—your face, to rob someone, or to make funny faces—and they're all connected to 19th-century slang in ways that make English's history wonderfully messy!
