Definition
A sudden craving to eat snacks or light food, often used humorously or to describe random hunger between meals.
Etymology
From 'munch' (to chew noisily) plus the suffix '-ies.' The word became popular in the 1950s-60s, and gained additional cultural meaning in the 1970s in slang contexts.
Kelly Says
The term 'the munchies' became so associated with cannabis culture in the 1970s that it changed the word's meaning—what was just casual snacking now carries a cultural reference that linguists still track in dictionaries.
